FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

For your convenience, our current and complete boarding policy is provided below in a question and answer format.  Please read this information in its entirety before boarding.

MEDICAL, VACCINATION, AND AGE REQUIREMENTS

What are the medical and vaccination boarding requirements for adult dogs 1 year and older?

A wellness exam by a veterinarian is required within 1 year prior to boarding.

One of the following is required for boarding: (1) Year round monthly heartworm preventative and a negative fecal check within 1 year prior to boarding, or (2) if not taking year round monthly heartworm preventative, a negative fecal check within 6 months prior to boarding, or (3) deworming by a veterinarian followed by a negative fecal check within 6 months prior to boarding.  If your dog was found to have worms at his last fecal exam, he must have completed all prescribed medication and must be RETESTED and NEGATIVE before he can board.

Your dog must have no fleas or ticks.  Frontline Plus should be applied at least 48 hours prior to boarding to remove any fleas and ticks already on your dog and to protect your dog from picking up fleas and ticks.  Dogs with fleas or ticks WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED FOR BOARDING.

For adult dogs, a Rabies vaccination is required within 2 years prior to boarding (this is West Virginia state law).

A DHPP vaccination is required within 2 years prior to boarding.  Some veterinarians vaccinate every year and some vaccinate every other year for DHPP.  We will accept your veterinarian’s protocol as long as you have seen your veterinarian for a wellness exam within the past year and can show the due dates recommended by your veterinarian.  Vaccination against Leptospirosis is not required for boarding.  Some small breeds (e.g., Shelties) may have mild to severe post-vaccination reactions to the Leptospirosis vaccine which is sometimes included with the Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus, and Parainfluenza vaccines (commonly referred to as DHPP without Lepto or DHLPP if Lepto is included).  Dogs that are known to have had reactions or dogs that could possibly have reactions to this vaccine should have the Lepto vaccine removed when getting this vaccination.  Some veterinarians have dropped the Coronavirus part of this vaccination.  If it is included, the vaccination is called DHLPPC.

The Bordetella (Kennel Cough) vaccine is available and acceptable in injectable and intranasal forms, and this will depend on your veterinarian’s preference.  The Bordetella vaccination is required within 6 months prior to boarding. The Bordetella vaccination is shown to be effective for 6 to 8 months.  For dogs that board frequently throughout the year, revaccination every 6 months is needed to maintain optimum protection.  If it has been 6 to 8 months since your dog’s last Bordetella vaccination, we require an update at least 2 days prior to boarding drop-off. It takes a minimum of 2 days for this vaccine to be effective.  If your dog has never been vaccinated before, please ask your veterinarian for the INTRANASAL vaccine because it takes effect sooner and does not require a booster.  (The injectable vaccine requires a booster 3 weeks after the INITIAL vaccination in order to provide full immunity.)  Without the proper updates to the Bordetella vaccination, your dog could have borderline or no immunity in an environment that is potentially conducive to Bordetella.  Boarding, attending dog classes, going to dog shows, going to the groomer, going to dog parks, and participating in play groups put your dog at “high risk” because Bordetella is highly contagious in these environments.  It takes 2 days for the Bordetella vaccine to fully protect your dog, so the vaccination must be given at least 2 days prior to exposure.  You must plan ahead to make certain your dog is fully protected before boarding.  Another reason for this waiting period is a small percentage of dogs will exhibit temporary coughing, sneezing, or nasal discharge following vaccination.  Your dog will not be accepted for boarding if it has been more than 6 months since the last vaccination.  Abigold reserves the right to refuse boarding to any dog that we feel does not have proper immunity to Bordetella.  Abigold takes every precaution to prevent our boarding guests from contracting Bordetella.  We cannot be responsible if, despite our excellent, responsible care and best efforts, your dog should contract Bordetella while boarding with us.

All vaccinations must be given by a licensed veterinarian, and written proof from the veterinarian is required before your dog will be accepted for boarding.  The client must provide copies of veterinary records certifying the required exams and vaccinations.  If at all possible, we would like to have a copy of these records to keep in your dog’s Abigold file.

What are the medical and vaccination boarding requirements for puppies under 1 year?

Your puppy must have reached a minimum age of 13 weeks prior to boarding.  Your puppy must have completed all required vaccinations (including Rabies) prior to boarding.  Please note that the Rabies vaccination cannot be legally administered until your puppy is 12 weeks of age.   All puppies must have been examined by their veterinarian within 6 to 12 months of boarding.

One of the following is required for boarding: (1) A negative fecal check within 6 months prior to boarding, or (2) deworming (by a veterinarian) followed by a negative fecal check within 6 months prior to boarding.  If your puppy was found to have worms at his last fecal exam, he must have completed all prescribed medication and must be RETESTED and NEGATIVE before he can board.  We highly recommend that you start your puppy on monthly heartworm preventative at 3 months of age or younger (check with your veterinarian for the proper age to start).  We highly recommend administration of this preventative once a month year round to prevent heartworms and most intestinal parasites.

Your puppy must have no fleas or ticks.  Frontline Plus should be applied at least 48 hours prior to drop-off to remove any fleas and ticks already on your puppy and to protect your puppy from picking up fleas and ticks.  Puppies with fleas or ticks WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED FOR BOARDING.

A Rabies vaccination is required by West Virginia State Law.  Please note that this vaccination cannot legally be administered until your puppy is 12 weeks old.  Your puppy must have a booster 1 year after the initial vaccination prior to following the 2 year booster policy.

In accordance with most veterinary guidelines, (1) three DHPP vaccinations are required at 6-8 weeks, 9-11 weeks, and 12-14 weeks of age or (2) two DHPP vaccinations, 3 weeks apart, are required if beginning as an older puppy (9 weeks or older). Puppies under 12 weeks of age should probably not receive the Lepto vaccination as there is evidence of serious post-vaccination reactions in this age group.  Puppies that are known to have had reactions or puppies that could possibly have reactions to this vaccine should have the Lepto vaccine removed when getting this vaccination.  The vaccine for Coronavirus (commonly called DHLPPC if Lepto and Corona are included) is given by some veterinarians and not by others.  We will accept your veterinarian’s protocol as long as your puppy has been examined recently by your veterinarian.

The Bordetella (Kennel Cough) vaccine is available and acceptable in injectable and intranasal forms, and this will depend on your veterinarian’s preference.  In accordance with most veterinary guidelines, puppies are given the intranasal vaccine as their first vaccination.  (The reason being that the injectable vaccination requires a booster 3 weeks later before the puppy has full immunity.)  It takes a minimum of 2 days for the Bordetella vaccine to fully protect your puppy.  In order to board your puppy (provided he meets the minimum age requirement of 13 weeks), you must wait a minimum of 2 days after receiving the initial intranasal vaccination, or you must wait a minimum of 2 days after receiving the SECOND injectable vaccination.  If your puppy receives the injectable vaccine, he cannot board until he has completed two vaccinations, 3 weeks apart.  Another reason for this waiting period is a small percentage of dogs will exhibit temporary coughing, sneezing, or nasal discharge following vaccination.  If it has been 6 to 8 months since your (older) puppy’s last vaccination, we require an update at least 2 days prior to boarding.  Without this update, your puppy could have borderline or no immunity in an environment that is potentially conducive to Bordetella.  Boarding, attending training classes, going to dog shows, going to the groomer, going to dog parks, and participating in play groups put your puppy at “high risk” because Bordetella is highly contagious in these environments.  Your (older) puppy will not be accepted for boarding if it has been more than 6 months since the last vaccination.  The Bordetella vaccination is shown to be effective for 6 to 8 months.  For puppies/dogs that board frequently throughout the year, revaccination every 6 months is needed to maintain optimum protection.  Abigold reserves the right to refuse boarding to any puppy/dog that we feel does not have proper immunity to Bordetella.  Abigold takes every precaution to prevent our boarding guests from contracting Bordetella.  We cannot be responsible if, despite our excellent, responsible care and best efforts, your puppy/dog should contract Bordetella while boarding with us.

All vaccinations must be given by a licensed veterinarian, and written proof from the veterinarian is required before your puppy will be accepted for boarding.  The client must provide copies of veterinary records certifying the required exams and vaccinations.   If at all possible, we would like to have a copy of these records to keep in your dog’s Abigold file.

Why is year round monthly heartworm preventative highly recommended?

Abigold recommends year round administration of monthly heartworm preventatives such as Interceptor, Heartgard, or Sentinel.  These medications not only protect your dog against heartworms, but they also protect your dog against some other parasites.  When taken on a monthly basis, Interceptor (milbemycin oxime) is effective in preventing heartworms, roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms.  We caution that Shelties and Collies have adverse reactions to Ivermectin, the main ingredient in Heartgard, and this product should probably not be administered to these breeds.  Also, note that Heartgard is effective in preventing heartworms, roundworms, and hookworms, but may not fully control whipworms.  Sentinel (milbemycin oxime and lufenuron) is effective in preventing heartworms, roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, and fleas.  Even if your dog takes heartworm preventative on a monthly basis year round, we require annual fecal testing.  The reason for this requirement is not all intestinal parasites are totally eliminated by use of the heartworm preventative (e.g., tapeworms), and your dog could still be suffering from parasites if not tested and treated.  We also recommend a heartworm test every 2 years, even if your dog takes monthly heartworm preventative year round.

Why must my dog be free of intestinal parasites?

In order to protect the health of all dogs visiting Abigold, your dog must be free of all intestinal parasites.  If a guest dog has intestinal parasites, our play yards could become contaminated, and some types of worms could be transmitted to other guest dogs.  If your dog takes monthly heartworm preventative year round, he must have had a negative fecal test within 1 year prior to boarding.  If your dog does not take monthly heartworm preventative year round, he must have had a negative fecal test within 6 months prior to boarding.  If your dog has been dewormed by a veterinarian within 6 months prior to boarding, he must have finished all doses of medication and must be RECHECKED and NEGATIVE before he can board.  This is required of all dogs, even those dogs that are strictly house pets, and it is imperative for dogs that have been strays or have been rescued from a pound or shelter within 6 months prior to boarding.  Even if taking heartworm preventative year round, annual fecal testing is required because not all intestinal parasites are totally eliminated by use of the heartworm preventative, and your dog could still be suffering from parasites if not tested and treated.  Dogs that have ingested infected fleas could have tapeworms, which are not covered by heartworm preventatives.  Also, whipworms may not be effectively covered by Heartgard brand preventative.  Abigold takes every precaution to prevent our boarding guests from getting intestinal parasites.  We cannot be responsible if, despite our excellent, responsible care and best efforts, your dog should get intestinal parasites while boarding with us.

Why must my dog have an annual wellness exam by a veterinarian?

Abigold is concerned with the health and well-being of all dogs that board at Abigold.  Annual wellness exams by a licensed veterinarian are imperative to maintaining your dog’s good health.

Why must my dog be free of external parasites such as fleas and ticks?

This requirement is for the protection of all dogs boarding at our kennel since fleas and ticks could easily infest our kennel and grounds and be transmitted to other guest dogs.  Abigold makes every effort to keep the kennel and play yards free of fleas and ticks.  Also, dogs can get tape worms from ingesting infected fleas.  You should administer a topical treatment, such as Frontline Plus, a minimum of 48 hours prior to boarding your dog.  Keep in mind if your dog shows up for boarding and has fleas and/or ticks, HE WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO BOARD, and your vacation plans could be ruined.  So, please make certain your dog is clean and parasite free prior to drop-off.  If, after drop-off, it is determined that a dog has fleas and/or ticks, the dog will be treated with Capstar and/or Frontline Plus at the owner’s expense.  Abigold takes every precaution to prevent our boarding guests from getting fleas or ticks.  We cannot be responsible if, despite our excellent, responsible care and best efforts, your dog should get fleas or ticks while boarding with us.

Are the Leptospirosis, Coronavirus, and Lyme disease vaccinations required for boarding?

No, these vaccinations are not required for boarding.  Some puppies and small breeds (e.g., Shelties) may have mild to severe post-vaccination reactions to the Leptospirosis vaccine which is included with the Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus, and Parainfluenza vaccines.  Dogs and puppies that are known to have had reactions or dogs and puppies that could possibly have reactions to this vaccine should have the Lepto vaccine removed when getting this vaccination, and the Lepto vaccine is not required for boarding.  This vaccination is commonly referred to as DHPP if Lepto is removed and DHLPP if Lepto is included.  Puppies under 12 weeks of age should probably not receive the Lepto vaccination as there is evidence of moderate to severe post-vaccination reactions in this age group.  The vaccine for Coronavirus is not administered by all veterinarians (commonly called DHLPPC if Lepto and Corona are included).  Vaccination against Lyme disease is not required for boarding.  Please be advised that research shows the lyme vaccine can sometimes have adverse side effects, including arthritis.  Please discuss the pros and cons of this vaccine with your veterinarian before having this vaccine administered.  We will accept your veterinarian’s protocol for these vaccinations as long as your puppy/dog has been examined within 1 year of boarding.

What if my dog has never been vaccinated for Bordetella (Kennel Cough)?

The Bordetella (Kennel Cough) vaccine is available and acceptable in injectable and intranasal forms, and this will depend on your veterinarian’s preference.  It takes 2 days for the Bordetella vaccine to fully protect your puppy/dog, so the vaccination must be given at least 2 days prior to boarding drop-off.  Your puppy/dog’s FIRST Bordetella vaccination will most likely be intranasal.  Keep in mind that if your puppy’s/dog’s INITIAL vaccination is INJECTABLE vaccine, he must get a SECOND vaccination 3 weeks later to ensure proper immunity.  This SECOND vaccination must be given at least 2 days prior to the boarding drop-off date.  Your puppy/dog cannot board until BOTH injectable vaccinations have been given.  Another reason for this 2-day waiting period is a small percentage of puppies/dogs will exhibit temporary coughing, sneezing, or nasal discharge following vaccination.  Your puppy/dog will not be accepted for boarding if it has been more than 6 months since the last vaccination.

What is the most recent information on duration of immunity for the Bordetella (Kennel Cough) vaccination?

The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) provides vaccination guidelines for veterinary schools and veterinarians.  AAHA found in their recent studies (done in 2003 and 2006) that the duration of immunity for the Bordetella (Kennel Cough) vaccination is NOT 1 year as previously believed.  Instead, the Bordetella vaccination is shown to be effective for only 6 to 8 months.  AAHA recommends revaccination every 6 months to maintain optimum protection for dogs that are frequently in the boarding environment or other “high risk” environments.  Abigold provides this information for the protection of your dog.  If it has been 6 to 8 months since your dog was vaccinated for Bordetella, Abigold requires that you update this vaccination at least 2 days prior to boarding drop-off because your dog may have borderline or no immunity in an environment that is potentially conducive to Bordetella.  Dogs that are boarding are at high risk for contracting Bordetella as it is highly contagious in this environment.  Your dog will not be accepted for boarding if it has been more than 6 months since the last vaccination.  Abigold reserves the right to refuse boarding to any dog that we feel does not have proper immunity to Bordetella.

Do I need to show proof of vaccinations?

Yes, it is your responsibility to bring Abigold a written copy of your dog’s vaccination record from the veterinarian.  It is not the responsibility of Abigold to verify this information.  Written proof of vaccinations is very important; therefore, copies of complete medical records certifying all required vaccinations, exams, and preventatives must be provided at the new client visit or boarding drop-off (established clients only).  If at all possible, we would like to keep a copy of your dog’s vaccination record in his Abigold file.  IF YOU DO NOT PROVIDE WRITTEN PROOF FROM YOUR VETERINARIAN, YOUR DOG WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED FOR  BOARDING.  Many clients think their dogs have all current vaccinations, but we often find that one of the critical vaccinations is missing.  Therefore, we are very strict about this policy and require that you update all of your dog’s vaccinations, keeping the required waiting periods in mind.  Abigold will set up a file for your dog when you board for the first time.  This file will be updated each time you visit Abigold.  When your dog’s vaccinations are updated, you should bring a copy of the vaccination record to Abigold on your next visit so your dog’s file will be current.  Abigold will be happy to check your (Abigold) file when you make a reservation to make certain all vaccinations are current.  If the information in your file has expired, your dog will not be accepted for boarding until updated records are provided.  This could delay or cancel your vacation plans if you do not allow for required waiting periods on the various vaccinations.  Please note that Bordetella vaccinations must be given at least 2 days prior to drop-off.  This rule is strictly enforced for the health and safety of all dogs visiting Abigold.

I give my dog’s vaccinations myself or my dog is vaccinated by someone other than a licensed veterinarian.  Will my dog be allowed to board?

No, your dog cannot be boarded unless all vaccinations are given by a licensed veterinarian.  Abigold highly recommends that your dog be checked by a licensed veterinarian at least once a year.  Annual wellness exams by a veterinarian are imperative to maintaining your dog’s good health.  When your dog is checked by your veterinarian, vaccinations should be updated as necessary and required by WV state law and current veterinary standards.  We will only accept vaccinations given by a licensed veterinarian.

What if my dog needs veterinary attention while he is boarding?

Abigold will make every effort to provide a safe, secure, healthy, and happy boarding environment.  However, even with our excellent, responsible care and best efforts, there may be times that illness or injury may occur.  As the dog owner or dog owner’s agent, you must authorize Abigold to do whatever is necessary in Abigold’s judgment to care for your dog(s) in case of illness, injury, or emergency situation.  As the dog owner or dog owner’s agent, you must give Becky Timpano of Abigold permission to take your dog(s) for treatment to the licensed veterinarian of HER CHOICE in case of illness, injury, or medical emergency while boarding with Abigold.  You, the dog owner, are responsible for payment of all charges incurred.  These veterinary fees must be paid in full to Abigold at the time of pick-up.  In case of an emergency, Abigold will provide transportation to the veterinary hospital at no charge.  If, for any reason, Abigold must go to the veterinary hospital to pick up medication or for any other non-emergency visit, a $25 service fee will be charged.  The emergency clinic or veterinary hospital will charge a service fee (approximately $125) for any emergency visits outside of regular business hours.  The dog owner must agree to pay these fees should they be incurred.  Any applicable service fees must be paid in full at pick-up.  If your dog becomes ill or injured while boarding at Abigold, we will try to reach you or your designated emergency contact person at the number that has been provided.  Depending upon the nature of the illness, injury, or emergency, and the time of day, Abigold will make the decision on whether to contact the veterinarian of record, a different veterinarian, or the North Central West Virginia Emergency Clinic.  Keep in mind most veterinarians in this area do not offer after-hours emergency service and refer to the North Central West Virginia Emergency Clinic on evenings, weekends, and holidays.  All clients must complete and sign the form below authorizing veterinary care:

FORM AUTHORIZING VETERINARY CARE WHILE BOARDING AT ABIGOLD

I certify that I am the dog’s owner or the dog owner’s agent.  I hereby give Becky Timpano of Abigold permission to take my dog(s) for treatment to the licensed veterinarian of HER choice in case of illness, injury, or life threatening emergency while boarding with Abigold.

I understand that if an emergency arises that requires life saving or stabilizing care, Abigold will make every attempt to contact me or my designated agent at the emergency number(s) provided.  The veterinarian will provide any needed life saving or stabilizing treatment until and unless I am contacted and refuse treatment.  I accept responsibility for all fees incurred for emergency care.

Initial emergency veterinary exam, diagnostic services, and stabilizing treatment often cost a minimum of $500 to a maximum of $1000 or more.  VETERINARY HOSPITALS REQUIRE FULL PAYMENT AT THE TIME OF SERVICES.  I understand that I will have to repay Abigold and/or pay the veterinarian in full immediately. If I have a valid credit card account on file with Abigold, I authorize the use of this credit card for payment of these expenses to the veterinary hospital or repayment of these expenses to Abigold.  I accept responsibility for all charges incurred.

If I cannot be reached to consult about further care, I specifically authorize the treating veterinarian(s) to provide services with NO FINANCIAL LIMIT IMPOSED.

If I cannot be reached to consult about further care, I specifically authorize the treating veterinarian(s) to provide services with A LIMIT OF $                    IMPOSED.  I understand that imposing a financial limit on my dog’s care may result in the death or disability of my dog.  Humane euthanasia services will be provided in the event that I have not authorized sufficient funds to provide all the veterinary care deemed advisable by the treating veterinarian.

I accept responsibility for any additional charges for humane care and euthanasia if deemed advisable by the treating veterinarian.

This form must be signed and dated by the dog owner or the dog owner’s agent.

How old must my puppy be to board?

Your puppy must be at least 13 weeks of age and must have completed all three DHPP boosters, Bordetella, and Rabies at least 2 days prior to the boarding drop-off date.  It is imperative that your puppy has full immunity to contagious diseases prior to boarding.  We recommend that you board your young puppy at your veterinarian’s office or keep him at home with a responsible pet sitter until he has reached the minimum age requirement and has completed all vaccinations and waiting periods.  Keep in mind some small breed puppies may be too small in size to safely board in our indoor/outdoor dog runs, and this will be determined at the new client visit.  These smaller puppies may need to stay in a large crate for more safety.

My dog is a senior.  Is it safe for him to board?

This depends on the dog’s health, physical condition, and emotional well-being.  It also depends on how often the dog has boarded in the past.  SENIOR DOGS MAY NOT BE ABLE TO WITHSTAND THE STRESS OF BOARDING, AND THIS COULD LEAD TO ILLNESS OR DEATH.  Dogs that have boarded frequently may not be as bothered by the boarding environment as those that have never boarded or have boarded infrequently.

If you choose to board your senior dog and Abigold agrees to board your senior dog, you must agree that Abigold is not liable for any illness or death that may occur during boarding.  Abigold reserves the right to refuse boarding to high risk (as determined by Abigold) senior dogs.  In these cases, we recommend that you board your senior dog with your veterinarian or let him stay at home with a responsible pet sitter.

My dog has not been feeling well, has been lethargic, and/or has been suffering from vomiting or diarrhea.  Can he still board?

No.  For the safety of all other guest dogs, your dog must be in good health to board.   If you have a reservation and your dog becomes ill prior to the drop-off date, you should notify Abigold immediately.  If your dog has any health issues, we recommend that your dog board at your veterinarian’s office.  If your dog becomes ill prior to boarding, and a full recovery is not expected prior to the boarding drop-off date, then your dog will not be allowed to board.

My dog will be on medication while he is boarding.  Will he be allowed to board?

Your dog can board as long as the medication is for a minor health problem or for maintenance or prevention (e.g., arthritis or allergy medication, vitamins, heartworm preventative, antibiotics for a non-contagious illness or injury, topical treatments).  The owner must provide complete written instructions for administration of medication.  The owner must release Abigold from all liability regarding administration of these medications during boarding.  There will be no charge for administration of routine oral and/or topical medications.  Injections will not be given under any circumstances.  Dogs requiring injections and/or non-routine medications will not be accepted for boarding.

My dog requires injections or non-routine medications.  Will he be allowed to board?

No.  Dogs requiring injections and/or non-routine medications will not be accepted for boarding.  Dogs that have serious health problems requiring injections and/or non-routine medications are better off in the care of their veterinarian.

My female dog is in heat.  Can she board?

No.  FEMALES IN HEAT ABSOLUTELY WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED FOR BOARDING.  Boarding a female in heat could cause disruption to the other dogs in the kennel, and this could also lead to injury of the female or other guest dogs.  Females in heat also require extensive cleanup and disinfection.  We HIGHLY RECOMMEND spaying at 6 months of age because your dog will be healthier and will live longer if she is spayed before her first heat cycle.  All of Abigold’s personal dogs and cats are spayed and neutered.  Please discuss spaying with your veterinarian.

My dog is pregnant or may be pregnant.  Can she board?

No.  Abigold is not equipped to whelp and care for newborn puppies if this should occur while boarding.  Therefore, ANY FEMALE THAT IS PREGNANT OR SUSPECTED OF BEING PREGNANT WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED FOR BOARDING.  We cannot accept responsibility for the care of pregnant females, the whelping of puppies, or the care of newborns.  In this case, we recommend that your dog board with your veterinarian.

Must my male dog be neutered in order to board?

No.  However, we HIGHLY RECOMMEND neutering at 6 months of age because your dog will be healthier and will live longer if he is neutered early in life.  Males are usually less likely to be aggressive if neutered early in life.  All of Abigold’s personal dogs and cats are spayed and neutered.  Please discuss neutering with your veterinarian.

My dog was recently rescued from a shelter or was a stray.  Can he still board?

Stray dogs or dogs in shelters can be exposed to disease and parasites; therefore, a recently rescued dog CANNOT BE BOARDED unless he meets all of Abigold’s medical and vaccination requirements.  In some cases, Abigold requires a 4-week waiting period before any rescued/adopted/stray dog can be boarded.  Your dog must have completed all Rabies and DHPP vaccinations.  He also must have received his initial intranasal Bordetella vaccination at least 2 days prior to the boarding drop-off date or his SECOND injectable Bordetella vaccination at least 2 days prior to the boarding drop-off date. The dog must also have been tested for intestinal worms and found to be negative.  If the dog was treated for intestinal worms, he must have completed all doses of medication and must be RETESTED and NEGATIVE before he will be accepted for boarding.  The owner must provide written proof of vaccinations, and in some cases, Abigold may require WRITTEN MEDICAL CLEARANCE from a licensed veterinarian in order to board.  In our opinion, a dog that was recently rescued needs to feel secure in his new home and to bond with his new owner.  Uprooting him and boarding him shortly after rescue is not advisable.  If you must leave your dog during this initial period, we recommend that your dog board with your veterinarian (if he does not meet medical requirements) or stay at home with a responsible family member.

GENERAL KENNEL INFORMATION

Where is Abigold located?

Abigold is located in a beautiful, quiet country setting on 7 acres of property in south Monongalia County .  Abigold is 10 minutes from downtown Morgantown, 15 minutes from Star City, and 15 minutes from Glenmark Center .  Directions:  From I-79 South, take the Goshen Road Exit.  At the end of the exit ramp, turn left.  Proceed a total of 2.0 miles, passing Morgantown Machine (a large gold steel building on your left) and go up the steep hill.  Abigold (red brick and gray siding) is located at 882 Goshen Road at the top of the hill on the right.  From the Grafton Road (Route 119 coming from downtown Morgantown ) turn right at Hillside Greenhouse and Mt. Calvary Church .  Proceed a total of 1.6 miles, passing Goshen Baptist Church on your left.  Abigold is the fourth house on the left past the Goshen Church .

Why does Abigold require new clients to visit the kennel prior to boarding?

We are concerned with the health and well-being of all dogs staying at Abigold.  Abigold must meet the dog to make certain he has all current vaccinations, is in good health, is clean and parasite-free, and is non-aggressive.  This visit helps to put the dog owner at ease because he/she can see the facility, meet Abigold’s owner, and ask questions.  This visit also helps the dog.  If the dog visits with his owner and then goes home, he will remember that and not feel abandoned when his owner leaves him at a later date for boarding.  You must bring your dog’s vaccination records with you when you make your new client visit; otherwise your reservation will not be held.

My dog has never boarded at Abigold.  What must I do?

In order to hold a reservation, new clients must provide a valid Visa or MasterCard account number, expiration date, and security code, OR new clients must prepay by cash or personal check for 1 night of boarding PER DOG.  The prepayment is as follows: 1 dog = $26.00 plus tax, 2 dogs = $51.00 plus tax, and 3 dogs = $75.00 plus tax.  Prepayment must be paid at the new client visit or the reservation will not be held.  If the reservation is requested far in advance, and the new client chooses to schedule the new client visit closer to the boarding dates, the credit card information must be given to Abigold at the time of the request or a check for the appropriate amount must be mailed to Abigold immediately.  Reservations are not held until payment is received, so even if the reservation is made months in advance, it will not be HELD for the client until payment is received.  If payment is not mailed immediately, the dates may be taken by other paying clients.  Run space is limited and filled on a first-come, first-served basis only by clients who have made proper advance payment.

Can my dog bring his own bed to the kennel?

Yes.  In order to keep the kennel sanitary and clutter-free, two items of bedding are allowed for each dog run.  We prefer these two items are thin blankets that can be bagged and stored for the dog owner if they become soiled and/or destroyed.  Please do not bring filled pillows because dogs may destroy them.  Abigold does not have a dedicated commercial washer and dryer, so we do not launder personal items.  If laundering is necessary for some reason, you will be charged a service fee of $10.  Abigold is not responsible for any personal items left with the dog and cautions that these items can be easily soiled, destroyed, or lost.  Also, please be selective in the types of bedding your dog brings with him.  Some dogs chew their bedding and could choke or become obstructed from ingesting pieces of the bedding.  Please keep in mind that your dog will have these with him at times when he is unattended.  Abigold bears no responsibility if personal items cause injury to the dog.

Does my dog need to bring food and water bowls?

No.  Your dog does not need his own food and water bowls.  We use our own stainless steel bowls so they can be properly disinfected and will not accept the dog’s personal food and water bowls.

My dog enjoys playing with toys or chewing on bones.  Can he bring these to the kennel?

Yes.  In order to keep the kennel sanitary and clutter-free, two toys or chew bones are allowed for each dog run or one toy for each dog sharing a run.  Please keep in mind that dogs seldom play with toys while boarding because there are many other activities to stimulate their interest.  Please be selective in the types of toys and bones that your dog brings with him.  Your dog will have these with him at times when he is unattended and could possibly choke or become obstructed from ingesting pieces of these toys.  Abigold cannot be responsible for any personal items left with the dog and cautions that these items can be easily soiled, destroyed, or lost.  Abigold also bears no responsibility if personal items cause any injury to the dog.

Does my dog need a collar and leash when visiting the kennel?

Yes.  For safety reasons, all dogs must be on a leash when arriving at and leaving Abigold.  Even though Abigold’s kennel is securely fenced, it is very important that your dog is under your control at all times from the time he leaves your car until he is placed in his indoor/outdoor run.  Other dogs may be arriving at and leaving the kennel at the same time your dog is arriving or leaving.  Your dog may be friendly, but other dogs may not be friendly when meeting another dog under these circumstances.  For your dog’s safety, your dog must be on a leash when walking the short distance from the parking area to the kennel entrance gate.  Abigold has taken every precaution to provide a safe, escape-free environment.  Abigold is not liable for any injury or death resulting from lack of care on the part of the dog owner or the dog owner’s agent.  Abigold is not liable if, despite our excellent care and best efforts, your dog manages to escape.  If your dog is not under your control and he causes injury to a person or another dog, you will be responsible for all medical/veterinary fees.

It will be left to Abigold’s discretion whether or not your dog will wear his collar while housed in the indoor/outdoor run.  Regular buckle-type collars are usually left on the dog, but sometimes they are removed if tags are hanging from the collar.  Abigold may decide to remove the collars if two dogs are sharing a run in order to keep the dogs from chewing each other’s collar and possibly injuring themselves.  Slip collars, chain-type choker collars, or prong collars will not be left on the dog under any circumstances.  In order to keep the kennel sanitary and clutter-free, each dog has a storage drawer measuring 15 inches long x 11 inches wide x 7 inches deep.  Your dog’s collar and lead will be stored in this drawer with his other personal belongings.  Abigold cannot be responsible for any personal items left with the dog and cautions that these items can be easily destroyed or lost.  Abigold is not liable for any loss, injury, or death relating to collars.

Should my dog bring his own food to the kennel?

Yes.  Your dog should bring his regular brand of dry food with him to the kennel.  You should also bring some of your dog's favorite treats.  This helps your dog to feel at home while visiting the kennel and also prevents stomach upsets from abrupt changes in diet.  If you forget to bring your own food or choose not to, Abigold will feed your dog Iams adult maintenance dry dog food and Iams biscuits as treats for an additional fee of $1.00 per dog per night.  Some dogs may need a little canned food to entice them to eat.  Keep in mind that we may choose not to feed some of your canned food and treats brought from home if they lead to intestinal upsets.  We request that you pack ONLY THE AMOUNT OF FOOD YOUR DOG WILL NEED while boarding.  Please include written feeding instructions with your food.  Our storage units cannot accommodate large bags of dog food (larger than 10 pounds.)  We do not recommend the feeding of “people” food from home unless it is required as part of a special veterinary-directed diet.  Special veterinary-directed diets should be prepared in advance by the dog owner and should require no preparation or cooking by Abigold.  In order to keep the kennel sanitary and clutter-free, each dog has a storage drawer measuring 15 inches long x 11 inches wide x 7 inches deep.  Your dog’s food items from home should be packaged so they will fit into this drawer.

My dog is on a special veterinary-directed diet due to food allergies or other health concerns.  Can I bring his special diet?

Yes, if your dog is on a special veterinary-directed diet, he may bring this special diet with him.  You must provide Abigold with clear, written feeding instructions.  Food should be packaged in zip-lock bags with written feeding instructions included.  Refrigeration is available if needed.

Must I bathe my dog before he comes to the kennel?

No.  Bathing is usually not necessary.  However, your dog must be clean, brushed, and have no offensive odors.  Dogs that do not meet basic cleanliness requirements will not be allowed to board.

My dog is aggressive toward people or other dogs.  Can he board?

ABSOLUTELY NOT!  In accordance with Abigold’s kennel insurance, your dog must show no signs of aggression toward people or other dogs.  Dogs showing an aggressive behavior will not be accepted for boarding.  Abigold requires all dogs to visit prior to boarding in order to see firsthand how the dog interacts with Abigold’s owner and other dogs.  If your dog is accepted for boarding but then shows aggressive behavior after he has been left to board, you or your emergency contact person will be asked to pick up your dog immediately and remove him from the kennel.  If your dog is destructive or causes injury to any person or dog, additional fees will be charged for damages or medical/veterinary care.  Any applicable service fees must be paid in full at the time of pick-up.  For the safety of all concerned, dogs that are aggressive and create a problem will not be allowed to board in the future.

What if my dog causes damages to Abigold’s property or causes physical injury to any person working at Abigold or any person or dog visiting Abigold?

We carefully screen potential boarding guests, but sometimes dogs will become aggressive after their owners have left them.  If your dog causes damages to kennel property, you will be responsible for the actual cost of damages.   Any applicable service fees must be paid in full at pick-up.  Dogs causing damages will not be allowed to board in the future.  If your dog causes physical injury to Abigold’s owner or visitors (people or dogs), you are responsible for the actual cost of medical/veterinary expenses.  Dogs causing physical injury to Abigold’s owner or visitors (people or dogs) will not be allowed to board in the future.  Any applicable service fees that are not prepaid must be paid in full at the time of pick-up.

Who will be taking care of my dog while he is boarding at Abigold, and will my dog be given attention throughout the day and night?

Abigold is a small kennel that provides greater individual care than most kennels.  It is owned and operated by Becky Timpano, who has over 34 years of dog care and dog training experience, and personally owns 17 dogs and 2 cats.  Abigold kennel is attached to the owner’s home, and the owner is the only care-giver at the kennel.  Dogs are monitored at night since they are staying at the owner's home.  Most kennels do not provide this service.

Will my dog have access to water and food at all times?

Yes.  Each dog run has its own water faucet.  Water consumption is monitored closely throughout the day and night.  Fresh water is available to dogs at all times.  Our routine is to feed your dog twice daily unless otherwise instructed.  Puppies under 6 months of age will be fed three times a day.  All others will be fed twice daily.  We typically feed our guests between 6:00 and 8:00 in the morning and between 6:00 and 8:00 in the evening.

How much space will my dog have at the kennel?

Each dog will have a concrete indoor/outdoor run.  The inside part of the run is 6 ft. by 4 ft.   The inside runs have block walls for privacy when sleeping.  The outside part of the run is 15 ft. by 4 ft., and 8 ft. of this area is covered with a roof for shade and protection from the weather.  The outside runs are chain link anchored with wood at the bottom so dogs cannot lift the chain link with their teeth.  The tops of all runs are covered completely in chain link so dogs cannot climb or jump the fence.

What will my dog do while staying at Abigold?   How much exercise will my dog get while boarding?

For the entire boarding stay, your dog will be able to move freely in this indoor/outdoor run (21 ft. by 4 ft. total).  Doggie doors are left open unless temperatures are extremely cold or hot.  Abigold kennel is a room in Becky Timpano’s (the owner’s) home, so your dog will be given lots of experienced care, love, and attention.  Your dog will be moved to one of the grass play yards a minimum of three times per day.  Dogs that do not eliminate on concrete will be moved to the grass area more frequently.  Your dog will be allowed to run freely in this area for approximately 15 minutes each time.  The amount of time your dog stays in the yard depends on your dog’s comfort level with being away from his run.  Many dogs feel secure in their runs and don’t want to stay away long.  Other dogs really enjoy running and playing in the yard and stay for longer periods of time.  These exercise/play sessions are provided at no additional charge.  If your dog does not eliminate in the designated areas and must be walked on a leash to eliminate, we are happy to do so at no additional charge. YOUR DOG WILL GO TO THE PLAY YARD BY HIMSELF AND WILL NOT BE EXERCISED WITH OTHER CLIENTS’ DOGS.   THIS IS AND HAS ALWAYS BEEN OUR POLICY.

Will my dog go to the play yard by himself or with other dogs?

YOUR DOG WILL GO TO THE PLAY YARD BY HIMSELF AND WILL NOT BE EXERCISED WITH OTHER CLIENTS’ DOGS.   THIS IS AND HAS ALWAYS BEEN OUR POLICY.  If you have more than one dog boarding at the same time, all of your dogs will go out together unless you tell us otherwise.  Abigold has three separately fenced grass play areas.  Other dogs may be playing in adjacent yards while your dog is in one of the play yard, but the dogs are securely separated at all times.

How is the kennel kept sanitary?

The inside/outside dog runs are concrete.  They are disinfected with veterinary hospital-grade disinfectant.  Runs are hosed with clean water as many times as necessary to keep them fresh.  Runs are monitored and scooped when necessary.  Play yards are scooped as necessary to keep them in pristine condition for the next guest who uses them.

What type of heating system does Abigold have?

Abigold has radiant floor heat.  This is the most desirable heating system for dog kennels since the heat is in the floors where the dog is relaxing and sleeping.  Forced-air systems can spread germs, and the heat is lost through the opened doggie doors.  Doggie doors are left open unless outside temperatures are very cold.  Most dogs prefer having the freedom to go in and out at their leisure.  Dogs that are sensitive to the cold will have their doors closed.

Is the kennel air conditioned?

Abigold kennel has air conditioning.  Most dogs prefer to have their doggie doors open so they can move freely from inside to outside.  For that reason, the air conditioning is not used at all times.  When doggie doors are open, floor fans and an attic fan will be used as needed.  When temperatures become uncomfortable, the doggie doors will be closed, and the air conditioning will be used.

Does Abigold have a security and fire alarm system?

Abigold Kennel is professionally monitored 24 hours a day for burglary and fire by Secure US.  All doors are kept locked, and the outer fence gates are padlocked.  Keep in mind the kennel is part of the owner’s home (which is also professionally monitored), so the likelihood of someone entering the kennel undetected is very unlikely.  Abigold makes every effort to provide a safe, secure boarding environment.  If, despite our best efforts, Abigold Kennel is burglarized or has a fire, we cannot be responsible for theft of dogs, theft or loss of personal items or information, injuries, or damages.

Does the kennel have a fresh air exchange system?

Abigold Kennel has a fresh air system that exchanges the air in the kennel every 15 minutes.

Does the kennel provide grooming services or bathe my dog at the end of his boarding stay?

No.  Abigold does not provide bathing or grooming services.  We feel these services are best provided by professional groomers who are knowledgeable about different breed coats.  Bathing a dog without first properly brushing his coat could lead to matting.

Does the kennel provide transportation services?

Transportation is provided for veterinary services only.  In case of an emergency, Abigold will provide transportation to the veterinary hospital at NO CHARGE.  If, for any reason, Abigold must go to the veterinary hospital to pick up medication or for any other non-emergency visit, a $25 service fee will be charged.  The veterinary hospital will charge a service fee (approximately $125) for any emergency visits outside of regular business hours.  All service fees must be paid in full at pick-up.  All outstanding balances must be paid before your dog will be released to you.

What is the Summer Vacation Special?

The Vacation Special is a website offer that is available for a limited time only.  In order to qualify for this offer, your reservation (1) must occur between June 1 and August 31, 2007; (2) must be for a minimum of 4 nights; and (3) must be prepaid by check or credit card before May 1, 2007.  Abigold's regular boarding rate is $26.00 per night for one dog; however, if you meet all qualifications and prepay by check or credit card before May 1, 2007, you will receive a discount of $2.00 per night (a rate of $24.00 per night for one dog).  THIS PREPAID AMOUNT IS NONREFUNDABLE.   If the reservation is shortened or cancelled after payment is made, overpayment will be applied to the client’s Abigold account as a credit toward future boarding or training.  No cash or credit card refunds will be processed under any circumstances.  If the reservation is lengthened after payment is made and before May 1, 2007, this discount will apply as long as the additional payment is made before May 1, 2007.  If the additional payment for this revision is made after May 1, 2007, or at drop-off or pick-up, then this discount will NOT apply and the rate for this revised portion of the reservation will default to the regular rate of $26.00 per night for one dog.

OTHER DISCOUNTS, ONLINE COUPONS, AND GIFT CERTIFICATES CANNOT BE USED IN COMBINATION WITH THIS SPECIAL OFFER.  If you have a gift certificate or online coupon, we will be happy to calculate the reservation both ways – using the Vacation Special with no other discounts and using the regular rate with your gift certificate/discount coupon.  We will charge you the lower of these two calculations.  In order to use the Vacation Special, you MUST meet all requirements and prepay by check or credit card before May 1, 2007.  If you pay after May 1, 2007, this offer is void, and the rate will default to the regular rate of $26.00 per night for one dog.  This Vacation Special as well as all boarding rates, discounts, gift certificates, and online coupons are subject to change or cancellation without notice.

How are boarding costs calculated?

Our boarding fees are calculated per night.  On the drop-off date, you will pay for the first night regardless of the time of drop-off.  You will pay for each night between the drop-off date and the pick-up date.  On the pick-up date, you will NOT pay for another night if you pick up during our morning business hours (when available).  You WILL pay for another night if you pick up during our evening business hours.

For example, let's say your dog has a weekend reservation.  If your dog is dropped off on Friday morning at 9:00 a.m., you will be charged for Friday night.  If your dog is dropped off on Friday evening at 6:00 p.m., you will be charged for Friday night.  You will pay for Saturday night.  If your dog is picked up at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, evening you will pay for Sunday night.  If your dog is picked up on Monday morning at 9:00 a.m., you will pay for Sunday night but you will NOT pay for Monday night.

Does Abigold offer day care services?

Day care services are sometimes available if space permits.  Day Care rates will be calculated as $24.00 plus tax per dog.  There is no multi-dog rate on Day Care.  Dogs must be dropped off between 7:00 and 10:00 a.m. and must be picked up between 5:00 and 7:00 p.m.  Dogs that are picked up late (7:01 p.m. or later) will be charged the nightly rate of $26.00 plus tax.
